Behold my superhero alter ego out on the Kansas prairie with my doctors bag and miss elo by my side:)

My new favorite thing:

And Elo's old favorite thing:

my first "original" creation

Made Italian Chicken Penne today - my first no recipe meal. Started with some boneless skinless chicken breasts that I dredged in flour and Italian spices before cooking. Chopped it over some penne, poured some yummy pasta sauce over the top, and spinkled on some mozzarella cheese. Just what a hungry surgeon needs post-call.

Also finished up another knitting project - a cute little vest/shrug thing that will be great for this fall.

My friend's son is turning 1 today, so I have his birthday party to head to here soon and then another friend's bf is turning 30 tomorrow. Two birthday celebrations in one weekend! Plus, I want to try to make it to the pool. My skin has seen zero sun this summer and it is almost officially over.

why I want to be a geriatrician

I spent the day at a local retirement community seeing quite a few cute little patients. The patient's rooms are rather small in the skilled nursing section so there isn't much space for chairs. I asked the patient if I could sit in their wheelchair while I examined them. They said yes, so I said down and began the interview. I quickly noticed the smell of urine but didn't think much of it. . . . . . . . .until I stood up to leave the room and noticed my pants felt just a wee bit damp. When I stepped out of the room and could still smell urine I immediately realized the error of my ways. For future rounds I think the safer option is to stand.

My new motto: Tired feet beat a wet seat:)

dr. bangs

I've been watching WAY too much "shear genius" on Bravo lately. Last night after a particularly good episode I took some scissors to my hair and created. . . . .bangs! (Note our adorable engagement pic in the background.)

Felipe's modeling pose definitely needs some work:)

home cookin'

Meet the chef chowing down on some meatloaf, roasted potatoes, and salad. Nothing like a home cooked meal after a long day in the clinics. Got to remove an ingrown toenail today!

Only 264 days until MD!

My brother getting married?!?!?!?!

a relaxing sunday morning

Got up this morning with a craving for warm scones - 1 hour and a gigantic mess of flour later here's the result - cranberry orange YUMMINESS!

Also woke up with an urge to shop and decided to redeem some of the points off of my credit card for an espresso maker! If only it was here in time to enjoy a nice cappucino with my fresh scones. http://www.amazon.com/Krups-FND111-Allegro-Espresso-Silver/dp/B0001I9R82

And a parting shot of miss elo who loves helping me knit.

just some au jus

Behold pork tenderloin with au jus - a lovely little crockpot recipe that got me my first rave reviews. I can't promise it wasn't post-call induced low blood sugar but either way felipe most definitely gobbled it up.

Actually made it out of the hospital on time today (5ish) - which was nice since I was there until after 7 yesterday. I'm actually going to miss the team next week when I am back in the clinics, but I definitely won't miss getting up at 5:30a!

the life of a medical student. . . .

Sitting here in the hospital getting ready for rounds to start and sipping on my new drink-of-choice, a big mug of coffee with a pack of carnation instant breakfast. Thought I would share a few mundane things from my daily life.

Sneezing up a storm today - despite being in the medical profession I just can't seem to get myself to take medicine. One of my patients the other day told me that a spoonful of daily pollen at the beginning of allergy season will keep the sneezies at bay.

My favorite patient quote this week: "No dope, no scope." This was in response to our request that she get a colonoscopy.

I discovered MULTIPLE grey hairs this weekend. Up until this point there was only been a few and I've promptly yanked them out. Good riddance! Unfortunately there were too many to yank without leaving a noticable bald spot so a bottle of Navajo Bronze later I am a shimmering brunette with a nice brunette spot on my bathroom rug to match.

hat, scarf, & garlic lime chicken

Had a great evening - Felipe's friend Jill came over for dinner. We had a lovely meal of spicy garlic lime chicken, santa fe rice, fiesta corn, and fresh avocado. Brownie sundaes on the balcony for dessert!

Watched a bit of the Olympics and then finished up a knitting project. Matching chunky hat & scarf in time for fall weather. I'm hoping the crisp fall weather arrives soon, and lasts until Spring.

Back to the hospital in the morning for my last week of inpatient, halfway through my Sub-I!

fluffy pillows!

Got out the sewing machine today and whipped up some new pillows for the guest room. Since we rarely have overnight guest, I flipped the bed the other way so it is more couch-like. Opened up the room quite a bit.

Off to Home Depot this afternoon to pick up some ceiling hooks so we can hang Felipe's Colombian mobiles.

This one is dedicated to my gma

Craziness - I used to LOVE the Nightmare on Elm Street movies. Can't decide if I want to see the remake though. . . . . its going to be awfully tough to beat the original.

lucky me!

Look what I found when I came home from a long day in the hospital.

Felipe said the florist asked what he did wrong:) GORGEOUS! I'm such a lucky bride-to-be!

And a pic of dinner - shrimp pasta salad with avocado and bacon. Nice and fresh tasting for a summer evening.

Off to meet up with some of Felipe's surgical interns for a drink so I gotta go get glam!

patients, patience, and porkchops

Just survived day 2 of my inpatient experience. LONG hours, but my co-workers are super nice so it makes it a bit better. So far Felipe has made it home before me both days! Lucky guy:) He's so fabulous he even got started on the porkchops for dinner served with spicy corn I threw together last night before bed.

I've got an experiment in the icecream freezer right now - creamer for the sugar and flavoring to make a super simple icecream. I'm hoping for some yumminess!

Ladies who lunch. . . .

Had a lovely weekend with my mom. Did a TON of shopping and duplex decorating. Ended up with some nice treasures. A new wicker chair for the bedroom, a couple new shirts (one for fun, one for work), a candle holder for the fireplace, and a nice bottle of wine. Made some roasted salmon with garlic green beans, wild rice, and corn muffins for a quick lunch before she hit the road. I couldn't send her off on an empty stomach! I think Miss Elo enjoyed having her here as well, she cuddled on the couch with us.

cover girl!

What a suprise - I'm one of the cover "models" for the new issue of Kansas Family Physician.

I don't even have a subscription so I'm going to have to track down some issues!

long time no type

Hola! It's been awhile since I have been on the blog. Lots of adventures since my last post. Felipe and I spent a lovely weekend in Lawrence to celebrate his 27th birthday. We strolled Mass street, bought him some new Birks, drank some fresh brewed beer, ate a fabulous dinner at Free State, attended Felipe's friends art gallery opening, munched on some homemade icecream, and hit the town with his friends. We almost needed a vacation from our vacation! It was SO nice to spend time with my love and push school to the back of my mind.
On the way back we stopped at the in-laws for a lovely pork lunch complete with birthday cake! We came home loaded down with tons of goodies: leftovers, toilet paper, a recipe book to put family recipes in, an electric toothbrush (which I have always wanted!), and a gigantic jar of artichokes! I felt like it was my birthday too.

Ths week I started my Sub-Internship in Family Medicine. I have clinic all this week, followed by 2 weeks of inpatient, and then a final week of clinic. Just got my schedule and I have 2-3 calls and only 1 day off during that 2-week period so I've got some hard work ahead.

I have had time to do some cooking. We had our bachelor friend Thomas over on Tuesday for a pot roast. My first roast turned out SO juicy - and SO small. Those suckers shrink!

Tonight I made Barefoot Contessa's Chicken Salad Veronique with some chicken I had roasted awhile back.

Both recipes were keepers with no leftovers, and only minor prep work.

Friday we are having the Schumachers over for Felipe's special salmon and then my mom is coming to visit this weekend! Lots of fun projects in store.

shawnee mission shopping spree! (part II)

Forgot to post my present to myself for surving the ER and maintaining most of my rosy outlook on life. The glass is half-full you know;)

Behold the cutest little trinket in the entire world! A tiny silver elephant with a faux diamond eye whose sole purpose is to watch over my rock as I sleep:

And I also picked up a leather steering wheel cover at Goodwill - brand new! Perfect for these scorching summer days so I don't burn my hands.

shawnee mission shopping spree!

To celebrate the end of my ED rotation I decided to do a bit of shopping over in shawnee mission. My first stop was at this really fabulous Goodwill store where I snagged 2 more chairs to complete our dining room set! What a steal:Now I just need to recover them so I have a semi-matching set. My next stop was at a shopping center where I found TONS of treasures. First stop was Michaels where ALL of their beach stuff was 70% off. I got lots of lovely little trinkets for my wedding reception. And then on to Pier One to pick up this lovely green lamp. I've been wanting it for ages but it has been all sold out across town. I just love the green! When I got home I rearranged the living room a bit to give Elo a nice view from her kitty condo. I figure moving the lamp and stand out of the kitchen will be a nice belated birthday present to Felipe;) Just have to hang the rest of my wall art and the living room with have a nice sprucing up. Next is the bedroom!

I'm off to join the Smoky Hill family medicine residency program at Manny's this scrumptious mexican restaurant in Midtown. For now bridezilla is away, lets hope for a long vacation.
