Lucky Number 13!

Baby Rosso is now the size of a peach! (or a shrimp, depending on what you read)

How your baby's growing:

Fingerprints have formed on your baby's tiny fingertips, her veins and organs are clearly visible through her still-thin skin, and her body is starting to catch up with her head — which makes up just a third of her body size now. If you're having a girl, she now has more than 2 million eggs in her ovaries. Your baby is almost 3 inches long (the size of a medium shrimp) and weighs nearly an ounce.

More Food!

This blog is turning into a food fest!  I think Fel and I are trying to eat out as much as we can before Baby Rosso arrives because we know restaurant life as we know it will swiftly come to an end.

Yesterday we went to the new Peanut on Santa Fe by our house.  So close in fact, Felipe suggested we walk.  He knows the way to my heart!  Hands-down the biggest/best wings in town.  I ordered the BLT which was scrumptious.  The diners next to us ordered theirs with a fried egg, which I am totally doing next time!

For dessert, I found the perfect use for the beets I got in our produce delivery box - Harvest Cake with Goat Cheese frosting.  Think of carrot cake, with a touch of hippy thrown in.  If only I could get my baking to look as good as it tastes.

Tonight Fel has journal club so while he dines on a $50 steak, I'm going to enjoy some El Salvadorian food at El Salvadoreno with my gf Jen.

What I'm Munchin' on Today

Fluffy Fresh donuts for breakfast.
Werners for lunch - accompanied by grilled onions, tomatoes, asparagus, and plantains.
Lemon mousse for dessert
(aka, I scraped the filling out of my lemon tart and folded it into homemade whipped cream.)

Baby Rosso is very happy.

Week 12!

Today marks 12 weeks, almost to the end of the first trimester.

Baby Rosso is now as big as a plum, measuring in at 2" and 0.5 ounces.

How your baby's growing:

The most dramatic development this week: reflexes. Your baby's fingers will soon begin to open and close, his toes will curl, his eye muscles will clench, and his mouth will make sucking movements. In fact, if you prod your abdomen, your baby will squirm in response, although you won't be able to feel it. His intestines, which have grown so fast that they protrude into the umbilical cord, will start to move into his abdominal cavity about now, and his kidneys will begin excreting urine into his bladder.

Lemon Buttermilk Tart

Made a homemade lemon buttermilk tart yesterday using fresh Meyer lemons from our produce delivery.  That's my piece below, topped with a mountain of homemade whipped cream.

Blogging about is has made my mouth water, think I will go enjoy a piece for before-dinner snack.

Hatch Collection

I am obsessed with this maternity collection from Hatch - what a cute video!

In the meantime I've treated myself to 2 budget-friendly Hatch-like tunics.  I think they will be perfect for now, big, and after baby Rosso comes.

Outfit post from Fel & I's last date nite - Happy Hour on the M&S patio.

Fel & I raided the frig and watched the Muppets the other night, ended up being the perfect Tuesday evening.

Also finished a knitting project -

Grillin'

The first grilling of the season - brats, green onions, potato packets, vidalia onion, corn, and plantains.  What a feast!

Evernote

I'm rather slow to warm-up when it comes to new technology.  I didn't have my first cellphone until I was 23, and didn't text for a few years after that.  Didn't join facebook until I was out of college and in medical school.  I even held off on Pinterest for months.  I've found once I've taken the time to acquaint myself with this new technology, I love it and just can't get enough.  My newest obsession is Evernote.  Right now I use it to "clip" recipes I find across the internets and tag them with keywords.  That way I can later search by ingredient, which I didn't today to use up this bunch of kale that has been sitting in the crisper drawer of my frig for way too long.  Anyways, I am now sharing my Evernote recipe notebook with you!

Kitties

I just cannot get enough pictures of Miss Elo and  Prince Jackson.  These two are too cute!

Reading is Fun: The Postcard Killers

Finished this one up in two days when I was on vacation last week.  Not exactly a classic, though it certainly was entertaining.  The perfect vacation read.

Ergo

Felipe trying on our friend's Ergo.  Luckily Hannah made him try it with a stuffed animal rather than their little Lucy. . . . . .let's just say it's going to take some practice.

They were in the process of moving to Topeka, so we took over some El Pollo Rey and homemade cobbler with ice cream.

Easiest Births Ever

This is from one of Felipe & I's new favorite blogs - Pregnant Chicken.  I've got my fingers crossed I"m one of these miracle women!

Some of you may be a little scared, okay terrified of giving birth.

Everyone loves to tell you about horrible births, so I thought it would be nice to share a birth story that is beyond awesome and that I know for a fact is true. Sure, it won't happen this way for everyone, but you can always hope.

Enjoy.

I met my friend Megan when her son was around two-years old.

She lived in the house across the street from the place I just rented and she was pregnant with her second child.

We'd hang out on her porch and she would tell me where all the good restaurants in the neighbourhood were and I would tell her about drunken evenings out with friends. I was impressed with her domestic prowess and she was impressed with my reckless, unscheduled life.

When she got to be around 37 weeks pregnant she asked me if I wouldn't mind being on call to run over to the house and watch her son before her mother could get there if she went into labour. I was honoured that she actually trusted me with her child and told her that it was doubtful that I would be needed in that much of a hurry. After all, women can be in labour for days.

"Uh, well not me" Megan said. So I asked how long it took for her son to get here. "44 minutes" she replied. "You mean 44 minutes after you started pushing?" I tried to correct her. "No, 44 minutes from the time I thought something may be happening until he was here."

She proceeded to tell me that she got up in the middle of the night thinking she had to go to the bathroom. She wiped and saw blood so she got worried and got dressed to go to the hospital. Then she had one pain and thought, "Oh man, this is it." Woke her husband up and got herself to the hospital. She had one more pain in the parking garage and felt like she needed to push but held off until she could get inside. The nurses heard her story and just rolled their eyes at the first-time-mother tale and admitted her. The moment she got in a bed she told the nurse she wanted to push so the nurse said, "go for it" and out came the baby. No pain. Just...here.

At this point I decided Megan must be an idiot. Surely you cannot be in labour for 44 minutes and just give birth like that. Surely she was one of those people that was just in denial about the pain or just too dense to notice. I mean, the girl is about 5'3" and 110 lbs soaking wet. It's not like she has giant hips and some cavernous vagina that can just unhinge and fire a kid out. She must be wrong.

Just to humour her I said I would be poised by my phone in case she needed to run across the street to watch the munchkin. She thanked me and warned me that she went into "labour" at 38 weeks last time so it could be anytime. I nodded and promptly forgot about it.

The next week rolls around and I'm coming home from a hangover breakfast and Megan's husband greets me on the street with a sunny, "Where the heck were you last night?". I told him I was at a basketball game, "Why?". "Because we have another little boy!" he happily told me. "Megan had him in 22 minutes. We just made it to the hospital."

Holy shit. She's not crazy. She's a freak. A lucky, lucky freak.

This time, at 38 weeks, she thought she had to go to the bathroom. Wiped saw blood and knew to get the hell out of there. Called me to no avail so called the neighbour down the street who had to run in her pajamas to make it in time. Her husband floored it to the hospital, tossed her in a wheelchair and screamed, "My wife is giving birth. Now!"

Now, I'm sure L&D nurses hear this about 80 times a night so I can appreciate their failure to hustle.

One of the senior nurses came over and asked how many minutes apart her contractions were. As Megan climbed up on the bed she told her she hadn't had any. Just as the nurse replied, "Then I doubt you're in labour, let's have a look.", out popped the baby.

Out popped the baby!

These aren't peanut children either. Both boys weighed in between seven and eight pounds each.

Needless to say, the stunned hospital staff released Megan and her baby with a good story for the next shift.

Fast forward four years. Megan's pregnant for the third time.

Wisely her husband read up on "How to Deliver a Baby at Home." and didn't call me as a babysitter seeing as my batting average was pretty sad.

At 38 weeks, Megan gets up to go to the bathroom, feels a little "different". Screams to her husband, "It's time". He leaps out of bed, tosses Megan into the tub and 'whoosh' delivers his daughter into the world.

How.  Is. That?

Awesome, non?

Like I said, she'd not a large girl by any stretch of the imagination. Her mother had average deliveries with all three of her children – not too great, not too horrible. So what makes Megan different? Hell if I can figure out, and man, did I quiz her.

I suppose it's just a luck of the draw like being athletic or musical, being able to figure out the tip, or naturally skinny with big tits. You're just lucky.

So here's to all you first time moms that are scared of giving birth. You never know, you may have the golden ticket, so cross your fingers.

And clean your tub.

Came across these awesome videos on a blog I follow called Marvelous Kiddo.
A home studio is now on our To-Do List.

Pewi Y-Bike

My latest Zulily score. . . . . .

And before you jump to some crazy conclusions (such as thinking I'm a shopaholic or something), wanted to let you know that I thoroughly thought this purchase through.  It was something I was planning on buying anyways, but when you can get it for 40% off, might as well jump for it.
Don't worry, there are still lots of things left for you to buy little baby Rosso;)

Reading is Fun: The Shack

Finished up The Shack Tuesday on my endless return trip from LA
(which is a long, frustrating story many of you have already heard.)
Anyways, I don't normally read religious books, and if I would have known just how religious this book is I likely would not have picked it up.  That said, I actually enjoyed it overall.  The plot drew my in, and once I'm halfway through a book I have a very hard time quitting on it.
Mackenzie Allen Philips' youngest daughter, Missy, has been abducted during a family vacation and evidence that she may have been brutally murdered is found in an abandoned shack deep in the Oregon wilderness. Four years later in the midst of his Great Sadness, Mack receives a suspicious note, apparently from God, inviting him back to that shack for a weekend. Against his better judgment he arrives at the shack on a wintry afternoon and walks back into his darkest nightmare. What he finds there will change Mack's world forever.

Spring Break Update

Still have a few days of break left, but wanted to update you on all of my nesting!
Here's a big pile of stuff never even unpacked.  If I haven't needed it in two years, don't think I'll need it in the next two.  Unfortunately Fel saw the pile before it made it out the door. . . . . .it's gotten a bit smaller since then.

I'm thinking this corner will be perfect for a cozy rocking chair and side table.  Maybe get a small throw rug and a nice piece of art to hang on the wall.

My gallery wall I've been dreaming of the past two years, finally hung!

A start to the guersery (guest room + nursery).  I've got the new bedding on, but that's about it.  I want a flashy lamp for the side table and want to recreate the mobile in the corner.  And again, a throw rug and some art.  Can't wait to start browsing Etsy!

This stuff is all going out in favor of a crib.  There's a few at walmart (of all places) that I really like.

Even more of my daffodils have bloomed and I brought out my spring pots - mint in the front, pretty pink foliage in the middle, and the back is a bush with white flowers.
Jackson wishes he was outside with me, poor indoor kitty.

Also got our new solar lights put out.

Fel's chilling with his guitar sipping on some delicious Colombian coffee, he even let me have a half-cup this morning after I showed him multiple journal articles stating coffee is okay.
Elo looking grumpy as usual, and Jackson charming as ever.

To end the day we put up the new hammock, watched a beautiful film (Hugo), made some tacos, and got  Baskin Robbins.
