Wedding fun!

Had a splendid time at Sara & John's wedding yesterday. Her dress was spectacular. White strapless satin with tons of gorgeous beading and jewels. The reception was even more dazzling - I'd never been to the Madrid before. The inside is historic and gorgeous. They had a tasty mashed potato bar that totally won felipe over. I was a dancing queen!

my current obsession

Florence Broadhurst - I very interesting woman who created fabulous wallpaper.

The complex, eccentric and talented woman who was Florence
Broadhurst was born in rural Queensland, Australia in 1899.

By the time of her death in 1977 Florence Broadhurst had lived and
worked in Australia, Asia, and England; performed professionally on stage; been
befriended by royalty; exhibited her paintings; and started an internationally
successful wallpaper company whose success was based upon her own designs. She
also found time to run a trucking company, start up a dress salon, play marbles
with a strong competitive streak and agitate for women’s rights.

New recipe night!

Tonight is one of Felipe's most dreaded nights, "new recipe night."
  • Felipe (calling from work): Want to go to Blue Koi for dinner tonight?
  • Me: Sounds good, but I've already got dinner started. Can we go a different night?
  • Felipe: Whats for dinner?
  • Me: Caponata and a nice green bean salad.
  • Felipe: Capo-what? Honey, is this going to be good?
  • Me: Love you! See you when you get home.
Actually set my alarm this morning for the lovely hour of 1030a to get the caponata in the crock-pot. The house smells absolutely delish! I hope it tastes as good as it smells. It's got a few "secret" ingredients I'm hoping Felipe doesn't notice (ie eggplant and capers.) This dish could be a goner before he even gives it a chance.

Anyways, the rest of the day was filled with errands and reading on the porch. Right now I'm reading this fascinating biography about Florence Broadhurst who is famous for her wallpapers designs in teh 1960's and 70's. I think when I get my own place, there will be some wallpaper action here and there.

Tonight, I think we're going to watch some Benjamin Button. If the plot is dull, there's always Brad Pitt to look at!

Tomorrow, is a med-school wedding. I'm excited to get all dressed up and dance.
Happy Friday! Hope you are lounging just as comfortably as Princess Eloise and her octopus pillow!

SYTYCD

I had quite the productive day today (once I managed to make it out of bed.) My good friend Hannah called offering me one of her extra tomato plants. One quickly became two, and after a quick trip to the store for some poting soil I have my own tomato garden growing out on the balcony. We're unsure of the type of tomato, so felipe and I will soon be in for a wonderful tomato suprise. I'm secretly hoping for cherry tomatoes, but honestly any fresh tomato is absolutely delicious.

I also made a trip to Hobby Lobby to pick up a frame and mat for my diploma. I don't know what genius decided to make diplomas a non-standard size but I'm guessing he has ties to the custom framing industry. I went for a standard size and mat, which looks fabulous but covers up some of the regent's signatures. My wonderful husband installed a hanging wire to the back of the frame and nailed it up in our study.

During this framing and nailing process, I was starting a new knitting project full of color and watching reality tv. All of my favorite shows are now off-season so its time to pick up some new ones. SYTYCD is definitely entertaining, I'm guessing its going to be a summer fave. I'm waiting for Mad Men season 2 to come out on video, I've got the last half of the season DVR'd but am waiting for the first few episodes.

At commercial break I broke out my Barefoot Contessa cookbook to shake up a delicious summer cocktail, fresh-squeezed whiskey sours. Simple, tasty, & tart.

*SYTYCD = so you think you can dance (a very fun reality tv show)

knitting & noshing

Slept in quite late this morning. I'm getting used to this lazy summer vacation thing. 2-1/2 more weeks until I gotta start setting the alarm (and using my to-go coffee mug!)

Anyways, breakfast this morning consisted of a homemade brownie with a steaming mug of fresh cappucino. Heaven!
I made Felipe Barefoot Contessa's chicken salad sandwiches for dinner, even running to Panera to get some yummy sesame bread. Marinated bean salad for the side. (Don't tell Felipe, but the recipe came from this delish vegetarian 5-ingredient cookbook my bro got me for Christmas awhile back!)

This evening Felipe and I watched Sphere - a rather intersting Michael Crichton flick. Definitely not Academy Award materal but I do think it deserved better than the 1-star rating given by TV guide. I finished seaming and stuffing a baby-shower gift for my friend Jana while vegging in front of the tv. Even had time for another brownie with a scoop of chunky monkey on top. If I don't watch it, I'm going to be the chunky monkey here soon!

caffeine magic

Made some delicious coffee this morning in my lovely new press. Unfortunately, once ready I was the only one awake to drink it!

Felipe was crashed out post-call and miss elo was taking her morning nap on the windowsill.

Had a lovely lunch of ajiaco this afternoon at the in-laws, always delicous! Currently felipe is napping in front of the tele (star wars is on.) Elo is gazing out the window, and I'm about to curl up with some knitting.

Happy Memorial Day!

KC Reception: Friends & Family

Wedding announcement

A lovely announcement ran in the KC paper this morning (thanks Gloria!) We are honored to be the only marriage announcement today - makes me feel extra special!

Check it out: http://www.legacy.com/KansasCity/Celebrations.asp?Page=Announcement&PersonID=127558954

Here's a picture of our announcement that ran in the Hutchinson paper last weekend. I think my momma wants to kill me for inviting the entire town (pop. 30k) to our reception!

In the kitchen!

Made a lovely summer lunch yesterday - spinach pesto salad from barefoot contessa with cold tomato and white bean soup. Delish! I even got Felipe to wake-up post-call and eat some (no easy accomplishment!) Poor guy had call Friday/Sunday.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

KC Reception: Opening Gifts (Act I.)

We got tons of amazing gifts at our reception! We are so appreciative of our friend's and family's generosity. Thank you for making our day so special!

KC Reception: a toast to Felipe

Brandon, felipe's best man, gave a lovely toast at the reception. I think you had to have been there for the bff's many adventures to capture the full beauty. Thanks Bdawg!

KC Reception: cutting the cake

Finally got around to editing some video. Brent did a fabulous job! Here's a short clip of us (primarily me, the blushing bride) cutting into the most delicious cake ever!

Proof that I indeed graduated

Behold the official graduation photos (that KU is trying to peddle for $25 a pop!)

1 year, countless memories

Brent was cleaning out the garber camera this week and sent me this "vintage" picture taken last year at Felipe's medical school graduation where the 2 families met for the first time.

So much has happened since last May - Felipe and I have moved in together, I've gotten a new car, matched into Family Medicine @ KUMC (my 1st choice!), had a gorgeous destination wedding, and attained my medical degree.

Here's the happy family one year later, at my graduation. I don't think we look a day older, it's all the joy that we have shared.

Kc Reception

Today was our reception at home. Talk about stress!!!! I spent the past week buzzing around like a bumblebee getting things done. I definitely could not have done it without my mom's help. Everyone helped out in their own little way - brent was on cat patrol and mixed some delicious mimosas, felipe picked up the cake and created a killer playlist, dad got the ice and provided muscles whenever he was needed.

All the hard work paid off, the reception was such much fun today. I got to wear my sassy vintage outfit and miraculously I didn't spill a drop on my dress! The food was tasty (well, the leftovers were tasty tonight.) I was so busy circling and saying hello to everyone I didn't get to fix a proper plate.

Can't wait for reception #2 here in a few weeks!
Here's a pic of one of the food tables!
Felipe and his "best man" Brandon who gave a lovely toast (with no roast!)
Opening presents.
More presents!
3 of my awards from last night that my sweet husband hung up for me in our study.

Stay tuned for more pics - my good friend Rachel took some lovely ones outside before the reception.

The Garber kids graduate (part deux)

Last night I was awarded my MD - what a sweet (and scary) feeling. 22 LONG years of school and studying to get there, 23 if you count preschool! It was a really special night. Gma and gpa drove up from Hutchinson and were dressed up so nice in matching maroon outfits. We met for dinner @ FreeState my favorite place to eat in all of Lawrence. After standing lined up in the hall for what felt like hours we marched in, collected our diplomas, and recited the hippocratic oath. Very awesome! I had 9 special guests all cheering for me!

5.12.2009

2 weeks and counting. . . . .

I spent the day gearing up for our wedding reception this Sunday. It's going to be a crazy week. Saturday is my hooding in Lawrence where I will officially become an MD - awesomeness! Sunday is our reception brunch up here in KC. Our house is a total mess, I can only imagine what its going to look like on Monday.

Today was overcast with a few bursts of rain. Perfectly dreary, so I made a lovely spring chicken soup with a homemade chicken stock, green beans, asparagus, turnips, and tomatoes. Very fresh and spring-like, though I think I'm already hungry again!
Also wanted to share a picture of my darling husband. Doesn't he look like a sweetheart?

Birthday, Graduation, Mother's Day, and Gnocchi

Spent the weekend down in Arkansas with the family for my brother's graduation ("hallelujah"). Thursday night mom's co-workers had a suprise birthday party for her at a cajun restaurant. Quite an interesting adventure! Friday gma and gpa arrived and dad grilled a spectacular pork loin.

Saturday was brent's big day. He walked across the stage all solemn and professional. So proud of him! Dad grilled some burgers and brats afterwards and mom made a delicious lemon pie. Even got to meet some of Brent's frat buddies.

Grandpa took us all to breakfast at Golden Corral Sunday morning for Mother's Day. Made it home today, where I whipped up some homemade gnocchi with sage-butter sauce to go with some fabulous leftovers Felipe brought home from his family's cook-out this weekend. I always see gnocchi (pronounced no-key) on Top Chef and wanted to try it for myself. Tasty, but not near as gourmet as I had imagined.

Diverticulitis

Just a quick post to let everyone know grandma is doing fabulous. Dr. Richman put her on some antibiotics yesterday, and she is feeling much better this morning. She has practically made a full recovery-- just needs a few more days of antibiotics. Dr. Melissa says no worries, mon!

Here's a good info sheet: http://www.greenhosp.org/pe_pdf/genmed_Diverticulosis.pdf
Off to Brento's graduation this afternoon. Can you believe it is finally here?!?!?!

ps Louise - loved the dice!

I'm catching on to this wife thing. . . .

The way to a man's heart might actually be through his stomach. I marinated up some pork tenderloin and broiled it with some spicy green beans on the side. Delish! Some of Felipe's friends came through town yesterday for the Neil Young concert (I wish we had tickets!) It was great to catch up with them out on the balcony during the brief 30 minute stint of sunshine between all the rain. Some of our med school buddies also stopped by later on to drop off a wedding gift. It was so much fun to show off our pics and videos! I think I'm still glowing from the wedding.
