a long day with a happy ending. . . . .

Today was day #2 at UMKC Truman Lakewood. I really like the hospital, the residents are nice, and rounds are fairly quick. Despite the beautiful rustic scenery, I despise the 35 minute commute each way - especially when I have to be there at 6am! Ugh, this morning I got up at 4:40 and left the house before Felipe even got up. Something is definitely wrong when a surgical intern gets to sleep in later than a family medicine student. But tomorrow I switch over to the geriatric service and will get to sleep in until the lovely hour of 7. The sun will be up before me!

I just received a phone call congratulating me on my acceptance into the AOA Honor Society. Pretty sweet! Looks like Felipe isn't the only smarty pants in this relationship;)

A nice meal. . . . .

Had another full day of "vacation." Met with the chair of the family medicine department this morning so that he could write me a letter of recommendation for residency, faxed over paperwork to Research hospital for my upcoming rotation, went to the grocery store, had knitting club, went to the gym, got felipe's oil changed, and cooked a lovely meal. I certainly did not feel the least bit guilty for drinking 2 glasses of a nice chardonney. I rather think I deserved it.

Fall is in the air - got some lovely squash and apples at the market. I think a nice apple pie pocket and butternut bisque are in the near future. . . .
Dinner. And by blackened salmon, I mean crispy! Had to take the smoke detector outside. . . .

Not pictured, but just as yummy, Cinnamon-Pear frozen yogurt. Sounds odd, but tastes of autumn: http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Cinnamon-Pear-Frozen-Yogurt/Detail.aspx?src=etaf

bye bye boards!

Despite getting up at 615 this am, my day has gone remarkable well.

I persevered through 8 blocks of 46 questions and completed my boards by early afternoon.

I promptly rewarded myself with yarn to make 2 new sweaters and a fun new knitting bag to tote it all around in.

Spent the afternoon watching Camp Rock on the Disney Channel and knitting fervently so I could torture Elo with a new stripey sweater. I think Felipe and I enjoyed it much more than she did:)

a lovely (and productive) day. . . .

Finished up the last of 2200 questions in my question bank today for board prep - ugh! Lots of time in front of the computer. But after a bit of Ob/Gyn review tomorrow I'm going to feel nice and ready to kick the board's butt. I'm less ready to get up at the crack of dawn monday morning.

As for the rest of my day, it began with a lovely breakfast of cappucino, scrambled eggs, crispy bacon, and gooey cinnamon rolls on the balcony. This was followed with the much less relaxing but just as necessary chores of cleaning the bathroom and working out.

The afternoon was spent browsing the mall, with a yummy dinner date at noodles & company and a HUGE fruity smoothie for dessert.

Tonight was the perfect girl's night - elo, me, a chick flick, an espresso martini, and knitting! I'm making her a bright sweater for fall. I even took her measurements for a custom fit. I'm hoping she loves it:)

213 days and counting until the wedding!

Lemon Cream Pasta with Chicken

Felipe gets a "golden weekend" which means he was on-call last night, post-call today, and then has saturday and sunday off. I'm hoping this gorgeous weather holds so we can hang out on our balcony.

Oui, oui!

French dip sandwiches out of the leftover pork au jus from a few weeks ago:
Tasty!

I've just been studying and studying and studying these past few weeks. Thank goodness boards are on Monday and I can get back to the clinics. I miss seeing patients! I've also been working on my personal statement which is supposed to convery who I am, why I want to go into family medicine, and my career goals and aspirations in only 1 page! Ugh!

Was in the mood for some dutch kitchen yumminess. . . .

So I made my own fried chicken with roasted garlic mashed potatoes and ramen noodle salad (much yummier than coleslaw!) Now I just need a piece of pie!

http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Broccoli-and-Ramen-Noodle-Salad/Detail.aspx - didn't follow this one exactly, used less sugar and no peanuts

Also finished up a little knitting project today for a friend's baby shower this saturday.

What a good day!

Today has been quite lovely. Slept in this morning until the sunny hour of 9, did a bit of studying. Ate a tasty breakfast, and then went up to campus for the first meeting of KUMC Knitsters! I think we are going to have a great group this year and I am looking forward to making new friends. Also did a bit of shopping where I picked up some hot new black pumps, a jersey dress for summer, and a black fancy skirt for my next formal event. Also got some cozy new pillows for sofa - so maybe the guest room pillows will start staying in the guest room.

Here's miss elo playing in a grocery bag:

And tonight's dinner of mediterranean salmon, fresh corn, and sour cream & chive mashed potatoes. http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Mediterranean-Salmon/Detail.aspx

Another top model pose from Felipe, I think he's roaring like a lion - fierce!

And dessert - a sweet and creamy white russian.

An exotic tastebud adventure. . . . .

To celebrate my AOA nomination - Felipe took me to dinner tonight at the restaurant of my choice. What a treat! I was feeling adventurous so we tried this hole in the wall Indian place called Taj Majal in Brookside. We ordered the "Taj Majal dinner for two" - which ended up being 3 full courses of yumminess with enough food to feed 4+ (we took 1/2 of our meal home with us.) Dinner began with a lovely vegetable soup with steaming samosas (dumplings.) Moved on to chicken tandoori (roasted chicken), rogan josh (LAMB in sauce!), and chicken tikka masala (chicken in sauce) with sides of basmati rice, naan (delicious bread similar to pita), and raita (creamy yogurt sauce). Dessert was gulab jamun (fried donutsin sugar syrup) and kheer (sweet rice pudding). Of course I had no clue how to pronounce any of these dishes but my taste buds were certainly happy. I was happy all the way to the car, until my brain registered how full I was. I should have known better than to eat both mind AND felipe's kheer. Ugh!

PS AOA is an honor society that the top academic students get nominated for. Felipe was elected back when he was in school. Wish me luck on my application. I want to prove you don't have to be male or a surgeon to be a smarty pants:)

A Photo Tour of my Hutchinson Trip - family!

The classic male Garber - asleep after dinner. I think Felipe will fit right in with this family:) Mason, 9months old - isn't he a cutie!
Fashion show with Kaylee and Jaelynn. Two cuties in pink!

Cousin Emily, kaylee, and mason.
Grandma, Kangaroo Stacy, and a pouting Jaelynn. Precious!

It was so much fun to see the family and hang out - the only person I missed in photos is my aunt who ran off before the camera came out. I'll get her next time! I think I'm going to try her summer sausage recipe one of these days, its a family favorite.

A Photo Tour of my Hutchinson Trip (cont'd)

My grandma's backyard and all of her gorgeous flowers - some have been passed down for 3 generations! When I get a house, I'll get starts to begin my own flower beds.
Boomer came along for the trip.
Grandma's homemade whole-wheat blueberry pancakes with a nice egg-over-easy and homemade blueberry syrup -- YUMMY!
3 generations of ladies on their way to the state fair.
Elo waiting for me in my in-box.

my hutchinson adventure. . . . .

My belly is happily full after a lovely breakfast of ham and egg casserole accompanied by a steaming cup of coffee. Due to the neverending rain, I am yet to make it to the fair but my trip has not been without reward.

I just adore hitting up all the thrift stores while I am in town. They always seem to have wonderful things! Here's a list of my treasures:
  • a trip to Bogey's (a local icecream shop with 100+ flavors of shakes)
  • 2 plants: a flame violet, and one called angel wings that rather looks like gremlin ears!
  • 4 white vases for my wedding reception
  • a lovely basket of silk flowers - very cheerful on these dreary days
  • a cute little green basket that I'm going to fill with homemade muffins
  • cocktail dress that is super cute - perfect for a holiday party
  • nine west leather purse - that will hold EVERYTHING I could ever want to put into it
  • a globe, which I have been wanting forever - but my mother has been wanting one longer so I'm passing it to her
  • trivial pursuit - I'm trying to start a board game collection, up next: monopoly
  • cute little trivets to put steaming dishes on at my next dinner party
  • shoes and more shoes and more shoes! 3 fabulous pairs to be exact
Still to come: scouting out reception venues here in hutch, the fair, and a family dinner.

crispy breaded shrimp with garlicky beans

After a lovely afternoon nap I woke up and tried a new melissa-style recipe for dinner. Something simple and nutritious, to my suprise Felipe cleared his plate!

Take a look:

Substituted kale for the arugula (tried 3 grocery stores, but alas, arugula was not to be found) and great northerns for the cannelini's, plus I got to use my new garlic press which is one of the greatest inventions ever. I despise mincing garlic. Recipe courtesy of Real Simple magazine.

i <3 the rain

It's a gorgeous rainy day here in KC. Cool enough to pull my plush robe and fuzzy slippers out of the hall closet and cuddle on the couch with a steaming mug of coffee.

Toasting up my oats to make energy bars - a family favorite recipe. I remember my mom making these for my dad during the cold winter to take on his hunting adventures. I wanted to leave something yummy behind for Felipe to snack on while I'm in Hutch this weekend.

check out the sunday paper!

Just got a lovely little call from the fact-checker at the Hutchinson News, perfect timing as I will be in Hutchinson to see my engagement announcement live!

vacation: day 1

Today was my first day of "vacation", also known as board prep. I got up bright and early at 9a, ready to study. I made it through one block of practice questions, grabbed some breakfast and hit up another block. Ugh, this studying stuff is hard work! Had to take a break and clean the bedroom.

After that I had FIVE chapters to read in my board review book. Took 2 lovely cups of hazelnut coffee with half&half to get through them. Also registered for "The Match". By then it was 2pm and time for rest and relaxation.

2 hours of knitting and a movie later I was bored out of my mind. I didn't realize how much I enjoyed being in the clinic, seeing patients, and staying busy until I was left to entertain myself. By 4:30 I knew I had to get out of the house so I made a grocery list, gathered up my canvas bag, and headed to Hen House. $50 lighter I headed home, still buzzed from my caffeine overload this morning.

Talked Felipe into going for a lovely walk around the neighborhood to work off my extra energy and I found the house of my dreams - this fabulous old house with a crazy overgrown yet landscaped yard. I'll try to sneak a pic one of these days.

Can't wait for vacation day 2:) Luckily I'm heading to Hutch this weekend to visit the fam and eat some pronto pups at the state fair.
