Movie Night

Saturday night we had Oscar movie night, watching 2 nominated movies.
Of course, what I didn't tell Felipe is that it was also called Handsome Leading Men movie night.
I could watch Brad, George, and Ryan for hours - - - literally.
But at the end of the day, my hubby beats them all.

Ides of March is up for best adapted screenplay.

Moneyball is up for Best Picture, Film editing, and Adapted Screenplay.
Brad Pitt received a nomination for best actor in a leading role for portraying Billy Beane.
Jonah Hill is nominated for best supporting actor, playing Peter Brand.

Anyone with facebook can go here: http://oscar.go.com/nominees play against me!

Reading is Fun: Microtrends

Just finished reading a fascinating book. . . . . .
I'll leave you with few review -- --.

"Stuffed with smart, offbeat tidbits....Penn and his co-author, E. Kinney Zalesne, deserve credit for leavening their facts and figures with humor and pop-culture asides." -- Bloomberg

"Unrelentingly fascinating....Microtrends is a diligently researched tome chock-full of counterintuitive facts and findings." -- The New York Times

Up next, something much less intellectual.

Scenes from my Birthday

Jackson hiding under some wrapping paper - he's his own present.

Fel munching on pepitas and serenading us.  I wont "Name That Tune!"

Delicious bottle of wine mom brought to the celebration.

Food, drinks, and good company.  What more could a girl ask for?

Winding down at the end of the night. . . . .

Cuddling while we watched Moneyball.

Lights out!

Blue tights - 2 ways!

Felipe is getting tired of being my paparazzi photographer, but I am loving it!  Friday night I made a quick change from work-wear to date-wear before heading to Smithville for a delicious double-date at Justus Drugstore.

Glasses: Zenni Optical
Dress: unknown (consignment)
Boots: Steve Madden

Glasses: Zenni Optical
Bag: L.A.M.B. (bought on Ebay)
Dress: thrifted
Shoes: Jessica Simpson (consignment)

It was one of the most amazing dining experiences of my life.  We savored 4 courses (6 if you count pre/after dinner drinks!) and the chef came by our table with each course to discuss his dishes.  I felt like I was on Top Chef!  Can't wait to go back.

p.s.  Felipe awards them with best french-fry in town.  They have this complicated 3-day process that results in the perfect fry.

Niagara Falls

This morning while I was studying I heard the roar of Niagara Falls coming from the laundry room.  I ran into to see a geyser of water shooting from that white pipe you see in the center.  We've been having problems with our drains.  Turns out it's not isolated to just the downstairs bathroom.
You know though, how lucky am I to have been home when this happened.  Most of the time I turn on the wash as I run out the front door.  Could you imagine if the entire contents at spurted out all over the laundry room?
Thank goodness cats can swim;)

Now, does anyone have suggestions on how to drain the wash so I can rescue my clothes?

Weekend casual (take two)

Wore this to the Rosso's last Sunday for my early birthday lunch.  I had knit this wrap ages ago, and it was the first time it made it out of the closet.  It was perfect for our "early spring" weather.

We be jammin'

Felipe and I's good friend from med school, Brian, was in town with his wife, Emily, who happens to be a friend of mine from college.  Wonder how they met;)  They just had a beautiful baby girl named Natalie and it was her first trip to Kansas City.
Felipe was over the moon to reunite with his guitar buddy and they had quite the jam session.

(Forgive the squeaky in the background.  I promise you it was not me trying to play percussion.)

Dinner on the Town

Felipe and I went to 801 Chophouse for a romantic date on Saturday night.  We both got all dressed up and enjoyed an amazing steak dinner ala Restaurant Week.  I nibbled on the 6oz filet with the creamiest mashed potatoes and grilled asparagus, while Felipe went for the manly 12 oz.  Who knew that filet came that big?!?!?!?  We played guess the sorbet flavor for dessert (they had a trio of homemade fruit flavors) and since I won he picked up the tab!  I'm such a lucky lady.

Booties

Remember the booties I was planning on making?  Somehow between moonlighting, studying, sleeping, and eating I found time to make a couple of pairs.  These were very straightforward to make and took about an hour and a half a pair, not too shabby.  Can't wait until I can make a few pairs for my own little babe.

Groceries

Made the mistake of going to Trader Joe's hungry this evening.  Ended up with some of my faves - apricots, brussel sprouts, red wine, etc.  Almost picked up some almond milk, which I've been dying to try.  Should have drawn the line at Soyrizo (tofu chorizo).  Felipe was not too impressed.  Tons to eat but no red meat, potato chips, or candy.

Golden Globes

Sigh. . . . . .I missed the Golden Globes red carpet last night.  But not to fear, there are photos galore posted all over the internets and my geek-chic hubby is recording Fashion Police w/ Joan for me tonight.

Here are my top 5 faves (thought I'd play good-cop and let the offenders off this week.)

Charlize Theron
A little bit 20's, a little bit sultry.

Claire Danes
I wish this photo showed the cut-out back.

Diane Lane
Pure old hollywood glamour.

Laura Dern
Who can say no to sparkles upon sparkles?

Kristen Wiig
Creamy dress contrasted with brunette hair = gorgeous.  This funny lady was a total stunner last night.

Rug

Our new rug arrived and is a total hit with everyone.  Fel loves that we finally have a rug.  I love that it is faux fur.  Elo loves to roll around on it.  Jackson loves to attack and then snuggle.  The rug wins 4-0.

Baby shower

Some of our good urology friends are having a baby boy early this spring.  For her upcoming baby shower I've decided to get a little crafty.  These are the cutest little booties!

Yesterday our weekly Door to Door delivery arrived.  On the menu. . . . .

and, fresh medjool dates!

Also, my new shoes arrived!!!
(that one gets 3 exclamation points).

Reading is Fun: A Farewell to Arms

A Farewell To Arms
Last night I bid adieu to "A Farewell to Arms."  Can't say I loved the book as a whole, it was quite depressing and dreary.  However, the love between Tenente and Catherine still rings true.

Carpet + Clean

Felipe and I decided we should probably invest in a carpet spot-cleaner.  Having multiple carpets, multiple cats, and a messy husband has added up to several unwanted spots.  After reading the reviews we settled on a little Bissel, it looks SO cute and I cannot wait for it to arrive.

What better to go with a carpet cleaner than a new carpet?  I'm loving the shape, and based on the reviews I just know I am going to love this rug when I finally get to meet up.  Depending on my level of love it will either go in the living room or up in my closet. . . . .

Movie Marathon

This weekend Felipe & I had a movie marathon - - - -

We started with The Debt.  This one is going to be a contender for some awards.  Cannot wait to see Jessica Chastain  on the red carpet.

Up next was Cowboys & Aliens.  The first half hour held so much promise, but the rest of the film couldn't hold up.  Still, it was perfect for a lazy afternoon.

1.07.2012

I have been semi-obsessed with cooking this year.  I think it's the combination of my time off from work and the crisp, cool weather.

Last night I made Creamed Chard, which was promptly gobbled down by my husband.  Who knew?  Thank you Door-to-Door organics!

I also roasted up some veggies I had on hand - a mix of celery, carrots, cippolini onions, yams, and butternut squash.  Roasted vegetables are my new go-to dish.  Chop, drizzle with olive oil, and bake.  Leftovers are perfect to blend up with some broth into a nice soup.  Easy peasy!

On the menu for today is apple bread pudding, a scrumptious comfort food.  The Garber family used to go to Sirloin Stockade every week and cause quite a ruckus - I always gobbled down their bread pudding.

boot scootin' boogie!

I've budgeted myself a set amount to spend on clothing each month - generally I hit up the thrifties, consignment shops, and ebay to get the most bang for my buck.  Quite frequently I've gone over budget, but why live with regret?  When I find something amazing I just have to take it home and love it.  It will bring me joy until I return to its home, and hopefully score some cash in the process.
**Have I ever told the story of how I used to fund my college education by scouting clothes and reselling them to ATC?  I'm that serious of a shopper.

Today I fell in love with 2 pairs of shoes - up first is the Shai Flat ankle boot by Mea Shadow.  Is it a flat?  Is it a boot?  Totally depends on how you look at it.  The best part is that it is going to be super-versatile for work.  Just look how practical I am.

To balance out the practical flat, I splurged on the Secret Ankle Boot from Seychelles.  It is going to be so much fun traipsing around town with twinkle toes!

thedailywhat:

This Is Just Great of the Day: Appearing in the latest Target circular is 6-year-old Ryan: A happy, gregarious, photogenic rising star in the world of child modeling — who happens to have Down syndrome.

Ryan has also appeared in a recent Nordstrom catalog among other clothing ads.

On the Daddyblog of a father whose child also has Down syndrome, Ryan’s mother writes:

The whole process of modeling is an extreme confidance booster for him. He received so much warmth and caring from the Nordstrom crew that he thought they were there just for him! We are honored that Ryan is making the Down syndrome community proud. He is a beautiful boy inside and out. He makes us better parents, and a better family.

I don't know how she does it. . . . .

Watched this last night.  It was about a woman (played by the adorable SJP) who had it all - an amazing wardrobe, a cozy home, cute kids, a handsome hubby, and her dream career.  Turns out you can't have it all.
Boo!  I'm still going to try. . . . . .

I can see clearly now. . . . .

Treating myself to some new specs from Zenni Optical - - - at $6.95 a pop, I don't feel bad having a pair for each day of the week.

New Year = New Look

Remember when I won that $100 Visa Gift Card at the Rural Health Career fair?
That was the time I ended up making the very embarrassing promotional video.
Since I won it at a work function I decided I should spend it on something work-related.
And what's more fun than fashion?  I can't think of anything.

Scored these beauties from the Dorothy Perkins winter sale.  I'm already starting to feel like Victoria Beckham.  Her line of dresses are so posh!
